What is Schau Essen?

Schau Essen Wiener Sausage is a product of a company called Nippon Ham.

Nippon Ham is a pioneer in Japan in the manufacture and sale of authentic wieners, made by stuffing natural sheep intestines with coarsely ground pork.

The German word “Schau” is the English word for “show,” meaning “theater” or “appreciation,” and “Essen” means “dining table” or “food.”

The most attractive thing about this wiener is the crispy texture of the skin when you eat it.

There are many different types of wieners, but Schau Essen is so popular that it is said to be the ultimate wiener.

What kind of food is Hot Dog??

A hot dog is a spindle-shaped piece of bread with a cut in it and a heated sausage sandwiched between them.

It was introduced to the United States from Germany, and today it has developed uniquely in each region, such as New England style, Chicago style, and French style, and is loved all over the world.

As a Japanese person, I was surprised that there were so many things I didn’t know about, such as the Chicago style, which doesn’t use ketchup, and the French style, where sausage is sandwiched between holes in a baguette.

I would like to make various styles of hot dogs (*˘︶˘♡)。.:*☆

coppepan

The standard Japanese hot dog is a coppepan topped with sausage, ketchup, and mustard. Add vegetables such as cabbage and onions to personal preference.

Coppepan is the English word for “hot dog bun.” It is a spindle-shaped, flat-bottomed bread unique to Japan that can be held in one hand. “Pan” means “bread,” and “coppe” comes from the French coupé, which means “cut.”

The taste of coppepan itself is soft and earthy. This bread is very familiar to Japanese people as it is served in school lunches nationwide.

Sausage Koppepan Sandwich 🌭

Ingredients

  • Koppepan (Hot Dog Bun): 1
  • Margarine: 4g
  • Vegetable Oil: 3g
  • Sausage (Schau Essen Long): 1 (approx. 50g)
  • Lettuce: 4g
  • Onion: 10g
  • Ketchup: To taste
  • Mustard: To taste

Instructions

  1. Prep the Toppings: Slice the onion thinly. Briefly soak the slices in water to remove the sharp bite, then squeeze out the excess moisture.
  2. Prep the Bun: Cut a V-shaped slit into the top of the Koppepan. Spread the margarine inside the slit.
  3. Sear the Sausage: Heat a small amount of vegetable oil in a pan and fry the sausage until golden and snappy. (Using a “Schau Essen” long sausage is highly recommended for that perfect snap! ♡)
  4. Assemble: Layer the lettuce and onions into the bun, then nestle the hot sausage on top.
  5. Finish: Drizzle with ketchup and mustard to your liking.

Tip: Wrapping the sandwich in a piece of parchment paper or a napkin makes it much easier (and cleaner) to eat! ヾ(´∀`)ノ

Croquette and yakisoba (fried noodles) hot dogs are also very popular.
