Hot Dog(ホットドッグ)

What kind of dish is Hot Dog??

A hot dog is a spindle-shaped piece of bread with a cut in it and a heated sausage sandwiched between them.

It was introduced to the United States from Germany, and today it has developed uniquely in each region, such as New England style, Chicago style, and French style, and is loved all over the world.

As a Japanese person, I was surprised that there were so many things I didn’t know about, such as the Chicago style, which doesn’t use ketchup, and the French style, where sausage is sandwiched between holes in a baguette.

I would like to make various styles of hot dogs (*˘︶˘♡)。.:*☆

The standard Japanese hot dog is a coppepan topped with sausage, ketchup, and mustard. Add vegetables such as cabbage and onions to personal preference.

Coppepan is the English word for “hot dog bun.” It is a spindle-shaped, flat-bottomed bread unique to Japan that can be held in one hand. “Pan” means “bread,” and “coppe” comes from the French coupé, which means “cut.”

The taste of coppepan itself is soft and earthy. This bread is very familiar to Japanese people as it is served in school lunches nationwide.

NUTRITION FACTS

INGREDIENTS

  • sausage 50g
  • oil 3g
  • coppepan (hotdog bun) 1 piece 50g
  • butter 4g
  • onion 10g
  • lettuce 4g
  • ketchup 12g
  • mustard 12g

COOKING INSTRUCTIONS

➀ Heat oil in a frying pan and fry the sausages. Cook over low heat and take your time to cook until it reaches the center.

I used Schau Essen’s special long sausage ♡ Schau Essen may be the most popular sausage brand in Japan. The crispy skin and juicy meat are irresistible.

②Make a V-shaped cut in the coppepan. You can also make straight cuts, but I find it easier to stuff the ingredients in this way.

③Spread butter on the bread.

④Slice the onion, soak it in water and squeeze it.

⑥Wash the lettuce, drain thoroughly and tear into pieces of appropriate size.

⑦Place lettuce, onions, and sausages in a coppepan and sprinkle with ketchup and mustard.

When eating, the koppepan tends to tear and the ingredients tend to spill out. Wrapping it in wax paper makes it easier to eat.
