Hot cake (ホットケーキ)

Hot cake, which has been loved for a long time in Japan, is typically a thinly baked hot cake topped with honey, maple syrup, and butter.

This time, I made these old-fashioned hotcakes easily using a hotcake mix.

By the way, pancakes and hotcakes are the same thing. Although the ingredients and cooking method are the same, “hot cake” is a uniquely Japanese name, while “pancake” is a common name worldwide.

In recent years, with the expansion of Eggs ‘n Things into Japan, photogenic pancakes filled with fruits and cream have become explosively popular.

Pancakes are said to have been introduced to Japan during the Meiji period.

It is a sweet that is loved by people and has undergone many changes over the years. There are also cooking videos, so be sure to check them out.

INGREDIENTS ( 8 small hot cakes)

  • egg
  • low fat milk 200g
  • pancake mix 200g
  • oil 10g
  • vanilla extract moderate amount
  • butter 20g
  • maple syrup 30g

I tried using two different types of pancake mixes and found that they were the same amount and had no problems.

COOKING INSTRUCTIONS

➀ Mix eggs and milk.

② Add pancake mix and stir well using a whisk. Be sure to follow the order in which you mix the ingredients to avoid lumps.

③ Add oil and vanilla essence and mix.

It is not good if the pancake batter is sticky. Place the pancake batter in a ladle and lift it to a height of about 30cm. Make the viscosity so that it flows smoothly when you tilt the ladle.
If the pancake batter is too sticky, adjust it by adding more milk.

④ Heat a frying pan and pour in the pancake batter. (If using an electric grill, set it to 170 degrees.) (If using an electric grill, set it to 170 degrees.) Pour the pancake batter in a straight line from a height of about 20cm without moving your hands.

Since no oil is used, please use a Teflon-coated frying pan. If you apply oil to the pan, the browning will be uneven. Also, using a slightly larger frying pan will make it easier to flip the pancake.

⑤ When it starts to bubble over medium heat, turn it over. It takes less than 2 minutes, so watch carefully.

⑥ Once both sides are browned, sprinkle with butter and maple syrup.
