Yaki shishito (焼きししとう)

What kind of dish is yaki shishito ??

After grilling the shishito, I sprinkled it with soy sauce and bonito flakes.

The bitterness and aroma of shishito peppers is a taste for adults. The flavor from the bonito flakes and the aroma from the slightly burnt soy sauce are also nice.

Recommended as a simple side dish.

What kind of food is shishito ??

Shishitou is a green-yellow vegetable that belongs to the Capsicum genus in the Solanaceae family. Chili peppers come in two varieties: spicy and non-spicy. Shishito peppers and green peppers are a type of chili pepper that does not have a spicy taste.

Chili peppers are originally from Central and South America and were brought to Spain by Columbus in the 15th century. It is said that a less pungent variety of chili pepper was born in the cool environment of Europe.

Spicy chili peppers were introduced to Japan in the 16th century. In the Meiji period, non-spicy varieties were introduced from Europe and the United States, but it did not become popular until after World War II.

Manganji chili peppers, Fushimi chili peppers, Himo chili peppers, and purple shishito peppers have been popular for a long time and are now branded vegetables.

In rare cases, shishito peppers may contain extremely spicy ingredients due to lack of sunlight, soil environment, dryness, etc.

Shishito, which has a pungent taste, is said to be misshapen or have few seeds, but there is no way to know for sure.

Strangely enough, when I discover spicy shishito, I feel like I’ve won the lottery.

Shishito peppers have a unique aroma and a slightly bitter taste. The seeds are also edible, so the common way to eat them is to cut off the tip of the stem and then grill or deep-fry them whole.

When frying, make several holes to prevent them from exploding. Also, shishito peppers are rich in vitamins, so cook them for a short time to prevent nutritional loss. This will bring out both the color and the scent.

Shishito peppers tend to lose moisture and become soft, so it is important to use them up as soon as possible after purchasing.
